We used to be taken to all the chopping events around the upper South Island to watch our cousin in various events, he was very successful and competed at the Sydney Royal show a few times

| John in action, everywhere that you walked around his farm were trees that had been fallen to practice his underhand chopping and other were cut into lengths to use on upright chopping. |
