Tree felled on Manawatu campus during cyclone.

A tree has fallen on Massey University’s Manawatū campus amid power outages, extreme flooding and wild wind in the region.

At 1pm on Tuesday a tree fell at the edge of the Manawatū campus on Workshop Rd, and could be seen crashing into surrounding bush.

Contractors and Massey’s grounds management were at the scene beforehand and knew it was going down.

Massey University grounds manager Gary Mack said in these storms anything could happen, and wind dynamics changed rapidly.

He explains what once could have been sheltered could still be at risk as winds changed all the time.

Nobody was injured and Mack said contractors were on site to deal with the tree and anything else that came up.

The incident came after the university had declared the Manawatū site was closed on Tuesday, with all staff and students advised to go home as widespread power outages closed down the campus.

Massey was hopeful the campus would be open again in coming days but encouraged students to work from home for the rest of the week.

Manawatū was experiencing extreme weather coming off of Cyclone Gabrielle, while nearby Tararua was in a state of emergency with rising river levels and flooding across the region closing multiple roads.

Strong wind and heavy rain warnings were still active in the area, according to MetService and were impacting Tararua and Horowhenua.

John and Vann feed the chooks and Vann has lost his leg

Before I went over to the Barrier I attended our Naval Reunion on Motuihe Island and had to practice our drill.

Very smart, are we not
Jack Donnelly (Burp no 2 ) is the Guard Commander and we (Bash Bishop and John Currin) are do a training run for the ceremony on Motuihe Island and our reunion. We had not used the Lee Enfield rifles since the early 60’s but it all came back, gradually. We are on the barge crossing over to the island and our only practice run.
